Project 180: Implementing a Test Proctoring Solution

Categories: News

If you are a faculty member, what’s more important than knowing that the student taking a test is actually the right student? How do you do that when the student is online and you never have any face-to-face interactions with them? A new way of proctoring tests is needed……

With the increase in online, blended and distance education courses, the nature of student test taking is changing. Students may not be physically in a classroom under the watchful eye of a teacher; they are often taking tests remotely using their own computers. However, as with any test, it is important to verify the identity of the test taker and the integrity of the test taking environment. Some faculty are already asking their students to purchase test proctoring software. Demand has significantly grown so it makes sense to find one solution that the University can support.

This need was identified by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Distance Education. They submitted Project 180 in December 2018. This project is classified as a transform project because it is a new service. A macro-assessment has been completed and 6 vendors have been identified: ProctorU, Respondus Monitor, Proctortrack, Proctorio, Examity and Honorlock. The next step is the micro-assessment which will dig deeper into the functional requirements and possibly recommend a solution.
