What is an IT Project?

Categories: News

An IT project is a discrete work effort undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. IT projects have defined outcomes, deliverables, deadlines, time and/or resource constraints. IT projects typically involve efforts to provide or improve an IT service. IT projects are different from operational work. Operational work is on-going, it doesn’t end. IT projects often create operational work once the project is implemented. For example, figuring out how to upgrade Windows computers to Windows 10 from Windows 7 was an IT project; the on-going work effort to upgrade is operational. Or, here’s another example, changing a manual workflow to an electronic workflow using Perceptive Content is an IT project; once implemented, maintaining the new electronic workflow is part of operations, it is no longer an IT project.
